Jesus – ‘The Light of the world.

What a wonderful gift light is! Without it we could not see anything properly and would spend our lives living in darkness. The warmth of the sun would be absent and colour in the gardens would disappear as no plant could grow. An existence of darkness! But thankfully we have the sun – the light of the world!

Yet amazingly Jesus Christ says ‘I am the light of the world’ and He goes on to teach that a person who doesn’t believe in Him is walking in darkness. A startling claim, yet absolutely true! Jesus Christ made this statement as God’s perfect revelation of Himself to this world. For in Christ, God Himself came to this earth – a world living in ignorance of, and disobedience to, God. A world in spiritual darkness!

But Jesus Christ 'The Light of the world' came and shone as the perfect light of truth and revealed God’s love in Himself, to this unbelieving world. To believe in that perfect light and embrace the truth means that the light is ‘switched on’ in our heart and lives, so we see what we were blind to. Our relationship with God is broken by our sin! But God is love, and sent Jesus Christ to die for our sin and as we repent of our sin we can receive by faith His forgiveness in Christ.

The perfect light of truth in Christ has penetrated our darkened hearts and minds. From then on, we no longer are walking in spiritual darkness, but have a desire to follow Christ and walk in His light. Jesus said: 'He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness but have the light of life'

As no plant can grow without the sun, so, no person can grow into a knowledge of God and themselves without Christ, the Light of the world.

Without Christ we have no true spiritual light but are as Jesus teaches ‘walking in darkness’. Has the light shone into your heart? If so praise God that it is so. If not, why not seek Him for it?

Jesus said "I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life."
