"In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory"

Ephesians 1 vs 13-14

Who is a Christian?

Who do you think a Christian is?

Perhaps you understand them as someone who has chosen a lifestyle or you see it as rules and regulations which people follow to be part of a special club. The two verses above explain three things about who a Christian really is:

1. One who trusts in Jesus.
‘In Him you also trusted’

The ‘Him’ is the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Why would someone trust Him? Is it because He was just a good example to follow? No, it was because they are…

2. One who has heard and believed a message.
‘after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation’

Someone who sees they need ‘salvation’. Saving from what? In Britain we have the law of the land. If you are caught breaking the law there are consequences. We have all broken God’s law. Not once, or twice but millions of times as Almighty God sees our thoughts, motives of our hearts, hears our every word and sees every action. He will punish every single sin for Eternity. We can’t clean up our record ourselves.

In an act of Almighty love God sent His Son to this world. He lived the perfect life and then on the cross died and bore the punishment for the sins of those who will seek forgiveness from Him and want Him to be Lord of their life. He rose again 3 days after dying, showing His sacrifice had been accepted. Only the Eternal Son of God can bear the Eternal wrath of God.

Christ offers forgiveness to all those who come to Him exactly as they are, trusting in His promise of forgiveness and turning away from their life of living for themselves. A Christian has been brought to see the love that Christ has for the worst of sinners that turn to Him. Almighty God becomes a sinner’s Father and loves them as He does His Son.

3. One who is changed forever.
‘You were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise’

Miraculously, when someone truly believes in Christ, God the Holy Spirit dwells inside them. He gives them new desires and a heart for the things of God. They want to please God, be taught through the Bible and have a love for other Christians. Only God can do this, it is utterly impossible for any man to manufacture this. The Lord Jesus calls this being born again. It can never be undone.

The bible verses above teach us that The Holy Spirit is a Christian’s guarantee. This means a down payment. He has done a work inside a Christian and one day He will finish that work and make them perfect and free from sin. This happens as they die and go to heaven or when the Lord Jesus Christ comes again at the end of time to judge the world.

Having read these few words are you a Christian? There is no greater question to answer.
